Setto, which stands for Settle Together, is a digital safe space helping young ethnic minority settlers in London overcome the barrier of making friends in an unfamiliar place while giving them a sense of belonging.

Problem Space
Over the last twenty-five years, both immigration and emigration have risen to historically high levels, with immigration exceeding emigration by more than 100,000 in every year since 1998. As of 2014, more than 295,800 migrants describe loneliness and isolation as their biggest challenge in London.
Research shows that people from black asian minority ethnicity (BAME) backgrounds are more vulnerable to loneliness due to barriers such as lack of social networks, cultural difference, language difficulties, discrimination and in-confidence. As my teammate and I are both international students coming from BAME backgrounds, we have also lived and experienced this issue firsthand.

Our Approach
After conducting interviews with potential users, we gained valuable insights from young settlers who highlighted the challenges of making friends outside of their workplace, particularly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it increasingly difficult to meet new people. The growing issue of social isolation, especially among newcomers, has inspired the creation of 'Setto' (short for settle together).
Setto is envisioned as a social platform designed to connect individuals in similar situations, fostering empathy and a sense of belonging among its users.

Help newcomers who are unfamiliar with their area feel less lonely by creating an environment for these people to build meaningful connections with those who can resonate with them.
Give our members an opportunity to stay connected with others.
Provide our users with a community filled with like-minded individuals and the chance to form their own – assisting them to establish a sense of belonging and togetherness.
